Devins, Vern and Dorothy

In Memory of Vern Devins, 1909-1982 and Dorothy (Jagger) Devins, 1910-1997 by Devins Grandchildren

Vern Devins and Dorothy (Jagger) Devins were both born and raised in Miami.

They married in 1933. Vern and Dot raised 5 children; Marion, Blaine, Dellene, Dale, and Lynne, in a small house just 1 mile north of Miami.

Vern worked as a heavy equipment operator, locally at Johnston’s Garage, and later owned Vern’s Cafe. His great soups, burgers, and Dorothy’s pies with soft french vanilla ice cream on top were definitely favourites. Vern’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, and vegetable gardening.

Dorothy was a busy mom with her outgoing children. She was an active member of the United Church Ladies Auxiliary. Dot enjoyed curling, always had a beautiful flower garden, and was a master at knitting socks and mittens. Dot had a wonderful energy that she took to work at the Miami Post Office as well as working the cafe with Vern, granddaughter Deb and some close friends.

In June 2013, Vern and Dorothy’s grandchildren got together for a reunion in Hinton, Alberta. A decision was made to make a group donation to the Miami and Area Foundation in honour of these two wonderful grandparents.

Each and every one of us have a soft spot in our hearts for the community they so proudly called home, “Miami”.
